The key elements in making an amazing barbecue are the proper lighting techniques, as well as high-quality lumpwood charcoal. A good way to light your BBQ charcoal would be with a charcoal chimney. Lighting your BBQ with the help of a charcoal chimney is very efficient and also safe and eco-friendly.
To start a great barbecue, we recommend using our Fast Pack BBQ Charcoal 20KG. We produce our charcoal out of oak wood, which is naturally sun-dried. The result is higher, and at the same time longer burning charcoal with less ashes and cleaner smoke. Each of our 20kg packs of lump wood comes in 2 separate bags of 10 kg each with about 80 to 100 liters in total packed with quality chunks of charcoal.
Step 1: Clean the Grill
Start by preparing your charcoal BBQ grill properly and using high quality lumpwood charcoal for the best BBQ results. Our Fast Pack BBQ Charcoal 20KG is made from naturally sun dried oakwood and comes in two easy to handle 10kg bags with approximately 80 to 100L of premium hardwood lumpwood charcoal.
Inside the bags, you will find carefully selected medium to large chunky pieces designed for:
Better airflow
Longer burn time
Higher cooking temperatures
Cleaner burning performance
More consistent BBQ heat
Before lighting your coal BBQ grill, always remove old ash from previous cooking sessions and fully open the air vents. Proper airflow is extremely important because it helps the charcoal ignite faster and burn more evenly throughout the grill.
Carefully open the charcoal bag using the stitched thread along the top instead of ripping the bag open. This helps reduce unnecessary charcoal dust and allows easier storage for any remaining charcoal after cooking.
Unlike many cheap BBQ charcoal products often found during charcoal BBQ sale promotions, our premium oakwood lumpwood charcoal contains larger dense pieces instead of excessive small fragments and dust. This creates a cleaner and more professional grilling experience for both home BBQ users and commercial barbecues charcoal BBQ setups.
Our BBQ charcoal is ideal for:
Home BBQ grilling
Restaurants
Catering businesses
Professional charcoal BBQ cooking
Long BBQ sessions
High heat grilling
Because the oakwood is naturally sun dried, the charcoal burns hotter, lasts longer, produces less smoke, and helps deliver cleaner flavour to your food without the harsh smells often caused by low quality charcoal products. Once your grill is cleaned and your BBQ charcoal is prepared, you are ready for the next step: filling and lighting the charcoal chimney.
Step 2: Fill and Light the Charcoal Chimney
Once your charcoal BBQ grill is prepared, it is time to fill and light the charcoal chimney using your premium Fast Pack BBQ Charcoal 20KG. Using a charcoal chimney is one of the best ways to light lumpwood charcoal because it creates natural airflow without needing chemical lighter fluids or dangerous fire accelerants.
Start by placing your charcoal chimney securely inside the grill or on a heat resistant surface. Fill the chimney with your lumpwood charcoal, allowing the medium to large oakwood pieces to sit naturally without overpacking them. The larger chunky pieces create excellent airflow inside the chimney, helping the charcoal ignite faster and burn more evenly.
Underneath the charcoal chimney, place:
Tissue paper
Scrunched paper
Thin cardboard strips
Insert them underneath the lower ventilation holes of the chimney starter. Once ready, carefully light the tissue or paper from underneath. The fire will begin pulling upward through the chimney as oxygen naturally flows through the charcoal.
Within a few minutes, the bottom charcoal pieces will start glowing red and gradually ignite the charcoal above them. Thanks to the dense sun dried oakwood used in our BBQ charcoal, the heat builds steadily and creates a strong consistent burn throughout the chimney.
Allow approximately 10 to 15 minutes for the charcoal to fully light. You will notice:
Flames rising through the top
The charcoal glowing orange
A light grey ash coating forming around the charcoal
Strong heat coming from the chimney
This method is far better than using lighter fluid because it keeps your charcoal clean and protects the natural flavour of your food. Many cheap BBQ lighting methods use chemicals that can leave unpleasant smells, affect taste, and create unnecessary smoke during cooking.
Using a charcoal chimney with high quality lumpwood charcoal gives you:
Faster ignition
Cleaner burning heat
Better BBQ flavour
More even cooking temperatures
Reduced chemical smells
Safer BBQ lighting
Once the charcoal is fully lit and covered with light grey ash, you are ready for the final step: pouring the charcoal into the grill and creating the perfect cooking heat for your BBQ.
Step 3: Pour the Charcoal into the Grill and Build the Perfect BBQ Heat
Once your lumpwood charcoal is fully lit and covered with a light grey ash coating, it is time to carefully pour the charcoal into your charcoal BBQ grill. At this stage, the charcoal inside the chimney will be producing strong, consistent heat that is perfect for professional charcoal BBQ cooking.
Using heat resistant gloves, carefully lift the charcoal chimney and give it a few small gentle shakes over the side of the grill. This helps remove loose excess ash before pouring the charcoal into the grill, reducing unnecessary ash buildup around your food and helping create a cleaner cooking area.
Slowly and carefully pour the hot charcoal into the grill.
Depending on your cooking style, you can:
Spread the charcoal evenly for direct grilling
Push the charcoal to one side for indirect cooking
Create separate heat zones for different foods
Add extra lumpwood charcoal for longer BBQ sessions
As the hot charcoal spreads across the grill, any additional charcoal nearby will gradually ignite as well, creating a full bed of strong cooking heat throughout the charcoal BBQ grill.
This method is one of the best ways to light a coal BBQ grill because it avoids chemical lighter fluids and dangerous fire starting liquids that can damage the charcoal and affect the flavour of your food. Many cheap BBQ lighting products leave unpleasant chemical smells and create inconsistent burning temperatures, while a charcoal chimney allows the lumpwood charcoal to ignite naturally using clean airflow.
Using our premium BBQ Charcoal 20KG gives you:
Longer lasting heat
Cleaner burning charcoal
Better tasting food
More stable cooking temperatures
Reduced smoke and sparks
Less waste and excess ash
Thanks to the naturally sun dried oakwood and large chunky lumpwood pieces, the charcoal continues burning evenly for extended cooking sessions, making it ideal for home BBQs, restaurants, catering, and professional barbecues charcoal BBQ setups.
Once your grill reaches the desired temperature, place your food onto the grill and enjoy the clean, powerful heat produced by premium hardwood lumpwood charcoal.
